History

The development of medical service in these regions has a big tradition. It goes back to ancient times, when the first Serbian hospital was built in the Monastery of Studenica in the 12th century, which carried the name “Sveti duh” (Holy Spirit). Simeon Nemanjić divided it into a department for mental and a department for physical patients. The first water supply and sewerage in the Monastery Studenica were built 1196, what is testified by the high hygiene level of that period. The second hospital came up in 1217 in the Monastery Žiča. After the “Second Serbian Uprising” in 1817, the first national outpatient clinic of the Kneževićs has been established in Karanovac (Kraljevo).

The first reference of clinical protection in this region can be followed back to 1837, when a small hospital was built in the Karanovac garrison. In the middle of the 19th century a hospital for treating syphilis was established, which was later relocated to Raška.

1863 one of the first hospitals in the 19th century was established in Kraljevo and the organized medical health care for residents began. The first director of the hospital was “Jovan the doctor” with a salary of 37 talirs.

The first pharmacy became its work permit in 1881, when the development of pharmaceutical duty started. The first dispenser was Dušan Todorović.

It was not until 1895, when the first civil hospital was established in Kraljevo, after the approval by the Ministry of Internal Acts, or its Health Care Department so to speak. It was situated in an unused building with 10 and 15 beds respectively.
In 1913, the town received its rebuilt hospital with 50 beds in a
general pavilion style.

It has been noted, that from 1939 to 1940 there was a hospital
with the name “Hospital of Moravska Banovina”. The director of
that hospital in 1940 was Dr. Vitomir Govedarević, a surgeon,
who reported to have made about 800 surgeries.
