About us

Kraljevo is a relatively small town, with a lot of models of urban architecture. In the process of development it went through all phases, from agrarian settlement to the present township.

The village of “Rudo Polje” is mentioned in the 15th century, which is later called “Karanovac”. By the act of Prince Milan Obrenović on April 19th 1882, the town of “Karanovac” changed its name into “Kraljevo”. This was considered a memory for the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbia and the arrival of the first crowned king - after the tragedy on Kosovo - into town.

Today Kraljevo is an economic, cultural and administrative centre, not only of its region, but also of Raška and Vrnjačka Banja. It is the seat of the region of Raška. The town is located in the central part of Serbia, in the eastern part of the Kraljevo basin between the two rivers Ibar and West Morava, at reach of the mountain beauties of Goč, Željina, Kopaonik and Kotlenik.

Junctions of vehicle and railroad traffic, tourist centers (Vrnjačka Banja, Kopaonik, Goč, Mataruška Banja, Bogutovačka Banja), cultural heritages (Monasteries of Žiča and Studenica, Maglič etc.), have a great influence on the development in these regions in the after war period. All this is followed necessarily by the development of the health system.

Kraljevo has a completely built up hospital with surgery, internal medicine, ATD (anti tuberculosis dispensary/clinic), polyclinic block, mother-child center, institute for health care, over 20 health stations, ward for specific rehabilitation “Agens”. All these objects are built after World War II.

The General Hospital in Kraljevo is a benchmark for five municipal medical institutions: Kraljevo, Vrnjačka Banja, Novi Pazar and Tutin; the territorial district, which is capped by the institution is one of the biggest in Serbia: areas of about 4,000 square kilometers with the longest distance of a 100 km from the Health Center. The hospital is directly responsible for over 207,180 residents and indirectly for all 323,230 residents in the area.

The clinical complex extends over an area of 4ha, where five big objects are located, with a size of 45,322 m2 in all. In 1999 the size of the area has been 17,500 m2.

The institute disposes 600 general clinical beds, of which 62% are used on average. The average duration of the treatments is 8.3 days, while 24.7 patients are treated in one bed per year.

The sum of all employed doctors and medical nurses amounts 899 people, and they perform about 700,000 examinations and interventions per year, with 8,200 minor and major surgeries per year.
